This is my 3rd book about flying helicopters in Vietnam. It's hard to differentiate among them considering the heroism displayed in their combat tours, and I am sure the same is true for all of the books written by helicopter pilots about that war. Mason's book reads like the raw unvarnished truth of a costly was that should never have happened. Most Vietnam veterans don't like to talk about the horrors and carnage they witnessed and the futility of retaking the same ground over and over. Mason doesn't mince words when he writes about the futility of the war, but don't diminish the courage of those brave men who fought valiantly whether they believed we should be there or not. We do (and did) them a grave injustice for faulting their participating in service of their country. He is on target with leadership's equating body count with winning. Over 50,000 names on The Wall prove that false, as does the vibrant emerging country Vietnam has become. Mason shows great courage in talking about the damage to his soul, life, marriage and mind in the aftermath. Untold numbers of men endured (and still endure) the emotional struggles of combat. The epilogue is valuable in providing "the rest of the story". The combat experience takes its toll over a lifetime. I highly recommend this book for an honest view of both the courage and emotional cost of flying helicopters in combat. Unless we have been there, there's no better way of beginning to understand what that experience is like. Mason's account almost touches your gut, an achievement in itself.
